Common BMW Malfunctions
The BMW 7 Series is widely celebrated as a sumptuous car with the curious ability to kindle euphoria whenever driven. It’s agile, athletic, fast and elegant. Its beauty, unparalleled. Despite the joy, comfort, pleasure and sense of freedom commonly associated with driving the BMW 7 Series, they are not without fault.
They have been plagued with electrical problems for many generations now. At the start of the decade, they were known to have issues with blinkers not working properly, difficulties with operating windshield wipers, and more. Now, one of the most prominent issues afflicting BMW 7 Series owners is the parking brake malfunction.
BMW’s in-car computer, iDrive, informs the driver that the parking brake isn’t working and prompts that the car needs to be inspected. This troublesome problem can be easily resolved by our staff of well-trained and well-stocked mechanics.

The BMW VANOS is a variable valve timing technology developed by BMW. The system variably adjusts the timing of the valves by changing the position of the camshaft relative to the drive gear. In simpler terms, it adjusts the camshaft for the intake and exhaust valves, allowing for smoother idling, more torque, and a more elastic powerband.
Symptoms of a Bad BMW VANOS System
- Loss of power and torque, primarily in the lower ranges, typically below 3k RPMS
- Engine hesitation and bogging in the lower rpm ranges
- Rough idle with frequent hiccups
- Increased fuel consumption or poor fuel economy
- Cold start issues and stalling in cold weather
- Engine fault codes, aka a check engine light
- Engine constantly falls into limp mode after acceleration
Vanos Fault Codes:
- P1520: Camshaft position actuator, exhaust
- P1523: Camshaft position actuator is jammed, exhaust
- P1397: Camshaft position sensor B
Two key milestones recommended are that you replace or clean your VANOS system, 50k miles and 70k miles. Take a look at your car when you reach 50,000 miles and use the above symptom checklist to see if you should change your system. While we do highly recommend replacing at 50k, sometimes a replacement can wait until 70k.
We at Timotors can help with all your VANOS system needs and are happy to help and educate those who need a replacement.
