My wife's GLE had the Check Engine light on. The car was just out of warranty window and I was dreading high service... cost at the dealership. I decided to give Texas International Motors a try. Boy, that was the best decision for a long time. They took the car to the back once I arrived and took it back to the front after 40 minutes. I was told the light was related to a small leak from the fuel tank because the cap may not be tightened properly. The cost of the work was ZERO! Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised. 40 minutes of work on Saturday and they didn't charge me a penny, which said a lot about their service and mission. Meant to write this review way earlier, like 6 months ago! Have been coming here for the majority of the maintenance on... my 2012 Mercedes and have always gotten a much better price than the dealership! Owner has been up front and friendly every time. Usually I'll drop my car off in the morning before work, catch a ride downtown to the office with the shop's driver, then get a ride after work to pick up the car. Have also had a water pump replaced here via aftermarket warranty and that went smoothly.Will be returning in a few weeks for another oil change!read more

The BMW VANOS is a variable valve timing technology developed by BMW. The system variably adjusts the timing of the valves by changing the position of the camshaft relative to the drive gear. In simpler terms, it adjusts the camshaft for the intake and exhaust valves, allowing for smoother idling, more torque, and a more elastic powerband.

Symptoms of a Bad BMW VANOS System

Loss of power and torque, primarily in the lower ranges, typically below 3k RPMS
Engine hesitation and bogging in the lower rpm ranges
Rough idle with frequent hiccups
Increased fuel consumption or poor fuel economy
Cold start issues and stalling in cold weather
Engine fault codes, aka a check engine light
Engine constantly falls into limp mode after acceleration

Vanos Fault Codes:

P1520: Camshaft position actuator, exhaust
P1523: Camshaft position actuator is jammed, exhaust
P1397: Camshaft position sensor B

Two key milestones recommended are that you replace or clean your VANOS system, 50k miles and 70k miles. Take a look at your car when you reach 50,000 miles and use the above symptom checklist to see if you should change your system. While we do highly recommend replacing at 50k, sometimes a replacement can wait until 70k.
